joan of arc was murdered by the roman catholic church for wearing men's clothing against biblical injunction. she is the founder of the modern nation of france which even the germans could not destroy- and they tried twice. the church that used it's authority to kill her canonized her nearly 500 years after her death in 1920.she died at 19 years of age, burnt at the stake for recanting her forced confession to heresy being the wearing of male attire not as is commonly understood the hearing of voices from satan.
joan's martyrdom was primarily a political one. it is the english, whom she helped toss permanently out of france, who captured her and agitated the church for her destruction. the french king whom she basically placed on the throne could have ransomed her but did not. everyone was scared to death of her. what she said the lord had told her to do( even though her voices and visions were all female)she did: led the celts of gaul in rebellion over their english overlords. her victory at orléans is one of the most important and decisive battles in history. the soldiers she lived and fought with didn't dare touch her. she indeed physically led an army into battles. she was wounded several times. her testimony in her trials is that of a particularly crafty and insightful theologian or lawyer not a country girl who could neither read nor write.
against ecclesiastical law ,she was kept caged and shackled in a english prison with male secular guards of the enemy she defeated. when at her trial she refused to confess, she was made to 'read' and sign a paper supposedly recanting and forswearing the wearing of male attire -in a cemetery on pain of torture and death by fire. once stripped of her male 'armor' and no longer, by virtue of her confession, shielded by the aura of not being a heretic but one visited with holy visions, it is thought she was perhaps, back in an english jail and back in women's clothes, raped. she reverted back to wearing male clothing immediately. the penalty for relapse was death by fire. at the stake joan bemoaned having to die in rouen, a stronghold of the burgundians loyal to england.
"Rouen! Rouen! Must I die here? Ah, Rouen, I fear you will have to suffer for my death!"
once a more sympathetic pope hit the papal throne, joan's mother and the inquisitor general of france, jean brénal, began petitioning for a retrial. on july 7. 1456 jeanne d'arc was acquitted of the charges of heresy. she had been dead for 25 years.at the dawn of the 20th century ,the process of making her a saint began to grind its why through the institution that destroyed her for being a female who dared to make war and win- a woman who usurped male power and privilege apparently they now believe through the grace of a diety.
"It has been argued that the Inquisition destroyed not heresy but the church itself. That any force that could burn Saint Joan of Arc and compel Galileo to deny his own discovery that the earth goes around the sun was a force that represented, as the Cathars had said from the beginning, the triumph of the Anti-christ."- otto friedrich
"You say that you are my judge. I do not know if you are! But I tell you that you must take good care not to judge me wrongly, because you will put yourself in great danger. I warn you, so that if God punishes you for it, I would have done my duty by telling you!"- joan of arc, addressing ecclesiastic judges at her trial
joan of arc is the patron saint of captives, militants, people ridiculed for their faith, the WAVES and the WACs of the us military as well as all soldiers.she is the only female military liberator in documented european history, certainly in christiandom. the country she created funded the american revolution, making the united states possible. founded by fathers, i do not think it inconceivable we will be saved by by women willing to once again wage war and like joan 500 years ago they will be attacked and vilified for all the same reasons. that's how far we haven't come to the truth- women will save us.
