Una Furtiva Lagrima

record hunting is a rather insular pursuit for me. i just vant to be left alone. this past week i got a particularly good haul- lots of hi-nrg and turkish 78s. when i went to one of my places however there was an older guy going through the vinyl in a painfully slow manner.all i wanted to do was get the hell out of there so i wandered around for awhile but then went over and asked him if i could look too. this turned into me helping him find records in italian- he didn't speak any english. in actuality, it was not so bad and i learned a lot.

" you like caruso?"

" uh, yeah..."

so he waves a record by benimiano gigli in my face

" you see, this guy the best... ask... you see."

gigli was benito mussollini's favorite singer so there's bit of a taint there. still, the guy has a lovely voice , more emotional than caruso. my new record hunting friend insisted gigli's better than caruso or pavarotti because he enunciates all the words.

well, it's always time to get to know another extraordinary voice. more music later but i did find a whole stack of the Thin Man movies. myrna loy is hot. and so is asta.
