fucking awesome. usually i do get a post in about our great big drunken fuck of a senator murdering a woman and getting away with it- i do try- but i was preoccupied with his health care fuckery and working for a living.just pretend it's july 19th.
mary jo kopechne was one of the so called ' boiler room girls' who worked on robert f. kennedy's short lived presidential campaign( he was assassinated 4 months after he announced his candidacy). she had worked as one of his secretaries after he was elected to the senate. she was active in the early civil rights movement and had moved to alabama in order to be a teacher. born in penn, raised in new jersey, schooled through the parochial system, she is remembered as a proper, devout catholic girl with no unseemly side. she quit politics, citing the devastation many felt when bobby was murdered. she later returned to washington to work in one of the first political consulting groups.
when she was killed , she was only 28 and her parent's only child. the man responsible for her death, ted kennedy, did not report the accident, nor did any of his male companions he dragged to the scene at the time, in anything near a timely manner even though there was ready access to several homes with phones. when the car was seen the next morning after 8 am by 2 fishermen, they called the police and a diver arrived within 25 minutes. teddy did not report the incident until he noticed police activity near the pond- a full 9 hours after the car went off the bridge. in Ma at the time no one was more politically connected/protected then ted kennedy. the inquest was secret, the DA refused to issue an arrest warrant even though they had sufficient evidence to do so- and was required to legally. he got off with leaving the scene of the crime and his license to operate a car was suspended for a few months. he even admitted he had been drinking and it was confirmed by his pals none of whom to this day will speak about the ' incident'.
it's believed she was alive for up to 2 hours when he abandoned her in the car and fled the scene. although he was the one who informed her parents of her death, they only learned he was the driver from the news media. her body was illegally removed from the proper authorities before autopsy and before her parents could claim her.
the morons in MA continue 40 years on to be represented by the reprehensible- making them culpable in the cover up and the negation of this young woman's precious life. if ted kennedy had ran to a nearby house, as the rest of us with any sense of decency would have, and called the authorities immediately- even if she had still died- 40 years of controversy and hounding would have dissolved quicker than with a pay off, a wink and a blind eye. ted kennedy was more concerned with his political career than with a woman's life which automatically made him unfit for office. the rest of the country got this- maybe if ted had acted with an eye to a human life rather than his political life he could still have been president.
"Laws can embody standards; governments can enforce laws — but the final task is not a task for government. It is a task for each and every one of us. Every time we turn our heads the other way when we see the law flouted — when we tolerate what we know to be wrong — when we close our eyes and ears to the corrupt because we are too busy, or too frightened — when we fail to speak up and speak out — we strike a blow against freedom and decency and justice."- robert f. kennedy.
the death of mary jo kopeche proves that if there's an ethos ted kennedy has never been about despite whatever flows out of his mouth it's freedom, decency and justice- the basis of our constitutional republic- because, frankly, some pigs are more equal than others. the lesson is that laws exist to be applied equally, impartially to all even senators and US presidents. teddy kennedy and barky obama are neither of them robert kennedys- just pigs who think they are more equal than the rest of us. as ted hovers over the grave with terminal cancer, what judge can be bought, what political hand can be wrung, what pile of lying rhetoric will keep death from driving him into the abyss?
when your appreciation for human life and it's right to freedom dies- you die. teddy may have made mary jo's grave but 40 years on i'd bet his own plot was authored by her the second he ran for the hills, leaving a girl and a car behind in the water under a bridge.
